Market Risk Analyst – Cargill – Genf, GE

Position Purpose & Summary

The Risk Management Group (RMG) is seeking a Risk Analyst for Cargill Ocean Transportation.

RMG is a team of experienced professionals organized and managed independent of the Business Unit and Group structure. Members of RMG are working closely together with those Businesses and Groups that carry Cargill’s largest transactional risks or are assigned at the Enterprise level. RMG’s independent reporting lines are jointly to Cargill’s Chief Risk Officer and to the Chief Financial Officer.

RMG supports the Commodity Risk Committee (“CRC”) in establishing limits, monitoring exposures and in their fiduciary oversight of Business Unit risk-related activities. RMG provides an independent view of a Business Unit’s risk positions. RMG staff identifies, creates, and maintains a range of risk measures that reflect both quantitative and qualitative inputs, with an emphasis on a forward-looking view. RMG’s vision to ensure a “no surprises” outcome for Cargill and deliver the businesses we serve a competitive advantage in market risk management activities.

The RMG CASC Group is comprised of the CASC Business Groups, Ocean Transportation and Metals tasked with the trading and processing of Grains, Metals and Freight commodities.

The individual will participate in projects to advance the current systems and risk tools to be used within RMG in a continuous changing trading environment. Purpose is to manage and measure the risk exposures for the various global CASC businesses. In principal the team focus is merely on the freight commodity although there are lot of dependencies on other commodities, as on consequence the individual will also need actively interact with other RMG teams across the globe.

Principal Accountabilities

Daily Risk Report (Stress/Position report) on the various commodities

Calibrate and measure the risk (VaR/Stress) on commodities by using (in-house build) risk tools

Develop/enhance risk models, tools and systems for Ocean Transportation and Metals Asia

Develop and implement tailor made tools for physical products and complex pricing structures for specific commodities

Work closely with RMG teams in Singapore and Shanghai to develop a broader understanding of the risk’s factors connected to China and their potential impact on the portfolio which can be developed into stress scenarios and ad hoc scenarios. in addition, work across the team to leverage best practices and developing common risk metrics/tools for the group

Implement and rolling out RMG policies/tool/practices to the different regions

Participate and prepare for Market & Risk Meetings (game plans, pricing)

Gathering market info and prepare risk meeting material

Challenge traders and game plans

Market price analyses


Minimum Required Qualifications & Experiences

  • University degree (minimum) Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Econometrics, Economics, Engineering or Statistics.

  • 5 years+, experience in Risk Management in a commodity trading environment.

  • Multiple years’ experience in the Dry Bulk Freight Market and Grain Market

  • Proven track record with regards to independently challenging traders/commercial teams with regards to strategies or transactions.

  • Mandarin speaking (ability interact flawless with RMG Asia)

Technical Skills

  • Advanced computer skills

  • Familiar with accounting concepts as it relates to commodity trading

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills.

  • Very strong Excel skills and VBA knowledge ( other programming languages are an advantage.)

  • Knowledge of option models.

  • Attention to detail

  • Results focused

  • Ability to influence constructively

  • Strong communication skills with superiors and peers.

  • Strong team player

  • Must always, in all circumstances, be able to have an independent “risk view”.

  • Pro-active individual always looking beyond the day to day activities.
